Save That It Sings In Me

A poem titled “April” by Sara Teasdale has been stuck in my heart for a while now. Evalin and Madelin recently performed a song that was arranged from her poem at a state choir event.

Simple as it is, Todd and I (Tami) really loved the poem and so I’d like to share it with you…

“April”
by Sara Teasdale
The roofs are shining from the rain.
The sparrows tritter as they fly,
And with a windy April grace
The little clouds go by.

Yet the back-yards are bare and brown
With only one unchanging tree–
I could not be so sure of Spring
Save that it sings in me.

The arrangement of the song really helps to explain the poem.  (video below).  It starts pretty dark and slow at the beginning, paralleling the poem. The poet knows that spring is on it’s way according to the calendar but she can barley see signs of it. The song begins to brighten with hope with the lyric “save that it sings.”  In essence the writer shares that something is singing in her heart that is giving her hope and inspiring her faith and belief that spring is truly on it’s way.

Of course, we are currently in the dead of winter and there is no sign of spring at all.  Still, I can parallel this poem set to music to numerous times in my life when I found myself waiting for “signs of spring” – waiting on the Lord to show me signs that He truly was orchestrating things for my good and bringing about a change in a particular situation.  I feel that I’m in that place even now as I wait for spring in certain circumstances of my life.  There are little signs here and there but nothing that completely tells me that the change is imminent, except that there is a little place in my heart where I can hear the Holy Spirit whispering to me (even singing in me).

Perhaps you are in a similar place right now? Holding on to a promise from God. Trying to keep your focus on a God given vision. Or maybe just walking through a situation or season that threatens to never end. I know how it feels. The greatest part of you wants to give up but you can’t and you won’t, because there’s a piece of your heart still singing.
That, my friend, is the Holy Spirit and the more you focus on that little song the louder it will grow. Sing with it until spring comes. It may be closer than you think.

“but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
~ Isaiah 40:31 ~
